When to visit Fiji

Fiji’s climate is tropical marine. This means that it is warm all year round, with minimal extremes. On an average day, the temperature is at 25°C, or 77°F.

It is good to go any time of the year, but the best time to visit is during the dry season, also called the “Fijian winter,” which happens from May to October. The weather during these months is cooler (22°C or 72°F), with minimal rainfall.

If you visit Fiji in October, you could also attend Fiji Day (October 10), where the country celebrates Fiji’s independence. It is preceded by a week of religious and cultural ceremonies that celebrate the diversity in the country.

Another interesting festival is the Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, which usually falls on October or November. This day was supposed to be dedicated to Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, but it is celebrated by all Fijians as a cultural feast, not a religious one. On this day, Fijians open their homes to other families to share their food and traditional sweets.

Fiji experiences wet season from November to April. Heavy rains and cyclonic storms typically happen during this season. But from December to January, the Fijian summer months, temperatures are quite hot.

Throughout the year, the water temperature in the country varies from 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82.4°F). The condition of the waters is ideal for those who would want to do snorkeling and diving any time of the year.

The climate in the country varies across various islands. The smaller isles are typically dry and sunny. There are certain places, such as Suva, which are usually cloudy and wet, while the southwestern areas, including Mamanucas and Viti Levu, get a bountiful supply of sunshine.
