When to Visit Taiwan

Most of Taiwan enjoys a tropical climate, with sunny and rainy seasons. Only the northern part of Taiwan has winter. The coldest average temperature recorded there is 15 °C.

Overall, the weather in Taiwan isn’t harsh, so you can visit this country practically any time of the year. The normal average temperature is about 24 °C (75 °F) in the south and 22 °C (72 °F) in the north.

However, the best time to visit Taiwan is from September to November, when the weather is warm and dry. Air pollution is also said to be at a minimum and prices are lower everywhere during this time of the year.

March to May is not the best time for a visit, because the weather can be unpredictable during these months. It can be a sunny day one day, then gray and rainy the next. There are also reports of sandstorms coming from China during these months.

For sun worshippers and beach lovers, the summer months of June to August are the best time to go to Taiwan and do different types of outdoor activities. July is the warmest month; the average temperature can reach up to 27 °C (81 °F).

If you plan to travel during the summer months, book flights and hotels way ahead of time, because Taiwan’s tourists count peaks during this time, making it more difficult to secure a hotel and flights.

You should also take into consideration the national holidays in Taiwan. Chinese New Year, for instance, is nice to celebrate in this country, but since almost everything – including shopping malls and restaurants – is closed during this celebration, you won’t have any place to go to.

Hotels also impose additional surcharges on Chinese New Year, so aside from having a hard time finding a room, the rates also come out really high.

Taiwan also has lots of visitors during the Lantern Festival, which happens in February. This is considered the most romantic night of the year.
