When to Visit Mauritania

When picking the best time to go to Mauritania, there are always several factors to consider –climate, festivals, holidays, and even animal migration seasons.

Since the country is rather small and tourism is not that developed yet, you should always pick a month which assures you of lots of tourist activities.

Because Mauritania is a desert country, you can expect it to be sunny all year round. The temperature doesn’t change that much; it’s hot practically all the time.

Mauritania experiences a very short rainy season from the months of July to September.

The cooler months of November to March is the best time to visit Mauritania. During these months, the temperature drops from a hot and sunny 45 °C (113 °F) to a cooler 25 °C (77 °F).

Since Mauritania is dominantly a Muslim country, it doesn’t have elaborate and colorful festivals like its neighboring African countries, but it does celebrate Islam festivals.

Like all Muslim countries in the world, Mauritania observes Ramadan, a month-long fasting period, so if you visit during this holiday, expect that many of the stores are closed most of the time.
